Virus Uses Crime Victims United Email and Web Addresses

CRIME VICTIMS UNITED

May 8, 2005

The latest incarnation of the Sober virus is spreading like wildfire over the Internet. Last week this virus accounted for 20 percent of all email sent.

The virus includes an attachment named with names like account_info.zip.

The virus forges its "From" email address using the addresses of many legitimate organizations, including Crime Victims United. Addresses that it has used include:

register@crimevictimsunited.org

info@crimevictimsunited.org

service@crimevictimsunited.org

To make it appear real, the body of the email sent by the virus includes a link to the Crime Victims United web page.

NOTE: NEVER OPEN ANY EMAIL ATTACHMENT UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE OF THE SENDER !!!

Usually this means that you have previously communicated with the sender and you are expecting the attachment.

NOTE: You can not rely on the From field of an email. It is easily forged and is routinely forged by viruses.
